Dianthus barbatus ‘Heart Attack’ Common Name: Sweet William-Perennial Zones 4 to 9. Full sun to part shade. Plants reach 24 inches tall and 12 inches wide; Herbaceous perennial groundcover. Growth rate: Moderate.
Very deep crimson red, carnation-like flowers really make a statement up against the glossy, dark green, lance-like foliage. The leaves are deep red when they emerge in spring. Most Dianthus barbatus cultivars are biennials, ‘Heart Attack’ has proven to have more perennial characteristics than others barbatus species. Prompt deadheading of spent flowers (shear back large plantings) promotes perennial tendencies. In optimum growing conditions it will reseed.
