Copiapoa mollicula is a diminutive and exceptionally rare cactus species, native to the hyper-arid coastal desert regions of northern Chile, where it clings to survival amid fog-fed cliffs and mineral-rich soils. Often considered a micro-endemic species within the Copiapoa genus, this plant forms low, solitary globular stems that rarely exceed 68 cm in diameter. The body is typically dark green to nearly blackish, sometimes appearing dusty due to a thin, protective bloom. Its tightly spaced ribs are slightly rounded and divided by shallow furrows, each bearing short, soft, flexible spinesa trait that gives the species its name (mollicula, meaning softened or delicate in Latin). These softer spines, usually grey or brownish, create a gentler texture compared to the harsh armature of related species. During the summer months, small yellow flowers emerge at the apex, modest yet bright against the dark stem. Known for its miniature scale, collectible rarity, and adaptation to some of the driest conditions on Earth, Copiapoa mollicula is a jewel among desert succulents, especially cherished by advanced growers and cactus taxonomists.
