Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Pink Elephant’ PPAF Common name: Mountain Fleeceflower. Sometimes listed as Bistorta amplexicaulis. Zone 5 to 9, maybe to zone 4. Full sun to part shade. Plants reach 15 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Growth rate: Rapid, Easy to grow.

This easy-to-grow, long blooming perennial produces loads of narrow, pink, bottlebrush-like spiked flowers atop tall, dark stems for nearly 5 months beginning in early summer to mid autumn.

The large, ovate, deep green leaves are clasped directly to the stems and form an upright, bushy clump in the landscape. It spreads slowly but is not invasive. Makes an interesting ground cover when planted in drifts.

Persicaria prefers cool, moist areas in full sun. Easily grown in average, medium to wet but well-drained soil. Best flowering in full sun, but in warmer zones or drier soils, it should be sited in part shade and given supplemental water. No serious pests or diseases bother this plant, but it is adored by butterflies and songbirds.
