Product Description
Delphinium elatum ‘Blue Lace’ Series Name: New Millennium Hybrids.
Densely packed spires of true sky-blue flowers with a touch of lavender pink on very strong stems in early summer. Removing spent flower spikes will result in another round of blooms on secondary spikes in late summer and fall. Its large, deeply incised leaves make this plant attractive even when it’s not in bloom.
The English hybrid type of delphiniums are bred by New Zealand Delphiniums and are hand crossed to produce the highest quality seed. These F1 hybrids have excellent form, strong stems, and a vigorous growth habit. They were selected for their improved tolerance of heat and humidity, while retaining their cold hardiness.

Delphinium elatum ‘Blue Lace’ is a beautiful and classic variety of Delphinium, known for its delicate blue flowers and elegant presence in the garden. Here is a closer look at its characteristics:
Appearance:
- Soft Blue Flowers: ‘Blue Lace’ produces tall, upright flower spikes adorned with charming, light blue flowers. The flowers often have a slightly darker or lavender-pink flush, adding to their appeal.
- Lacy Texture: The petals have a slightly ruffled or “lacy” appearance, which gives the flowers a delicate and airy feel.
- Tall and Stately: This Delphinium variety typically grows to about 4-6 feet tall, making it a striking focal point in the garden.
Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It flowers best in full sun, but some afternoon shade is beneficial in hot climates.
- Soil: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil.
- Hardiness Zones: Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3-7.
Care:
- Staking: Due to its height, ‘Blue Lace’ may require staking to support the tall flower spikes, especially in windy areas.
- Deadheading: Deadheading spent flower spikes encourages further blooms and prevents self-seeding.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Uses:
- Back of Borders: Its height makes it ideal for the back of garden borders.
- Cottage Gardens: Fits well in cottage-style gardens, adding vertical interest and a touch of elegance.
- Cut Flowers: The tall flower spikes make excellent cut flowers.
Additional Information:
- Attracts Pollinators: Delphiniums attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.
- Deer Resistant: Deer tend to avoid Delphiniums.
- May Need Support: As mentioned earlier, staking is often necessary to prevent the tall flower spikes from flopping over.
If you are looking for a classic and elegant perennial with beautiful blue flowers, Delphinium elatum ‘Blue Lace’ is an excellent choice. Its tall, light blue flower spikes will add a touch of sophistication to your garden.
