Baccharis halimifolia (Groundsel Tree) is a tough, adaptable native shrub valued for late-season interest and resilience in challenging sites. You will see its small, pale blooms in fall, followed by showy, cottony seedheads on female plants that brighten the landscape as other shrubs wind down.

Give it full sun for best shape and flowering. At maturity it typically reaches 36-120 inches tall and can spread 36-120 inches, so you can use it as a naturalizing shrub, a screen in wet areas, or a bold backdrop in coastal plantings. It tolerates extended moisture and periodic flooding and is well suited to saline or brackish conditions near marsh edges and along shorelines.

Plant it where you can let it look a little wild, or prune lightly to maintain a denser outline. Because it is dioecious, male and female flowers occur on separate plants; choose female plants if you want the decorative seed display, or choose male plants if you prefer to avoid seed production. Once established, it is generally low-fuss in the right location and performs best where drainage can be imperfect and other shrubs struggle.
