News spread like wildfire when this breakthrough Delosperma received Colorado’s Plant Select® award in 2012. Its incredible tricolor flowers are unlike anything we’ve seen in a Delosperma. Nickel-sized blossoms are apricot to bright orange with a ring of hot pink to magenta color surrounding the white eye. They are produced prolifically, blanketing the foliage from late spring through early summer and then often reblooming sporadically throughout the summer months.

FIRE SPINNER® is a weed suppressing groundcover that typically spreads 18-24” wide in two years. Its succulent, apple green foliage is evergreen and takes on bronze tones in winter.

Like all Delospermas, this one is also highly heat and drought tolerant, making it a good choice for waterwise landscapes. It thrives in rock gardens, on slopes, in containers, and in the landscape.

This plant grows best in well-drained, gravelly soil that is not wet in winter. Planting it on a slope will help provide these conditions. Due to its succulent nature, Ice Plant is very drought tolerant. Grow it in a hot, sunny location.

This, along with its evergreen foliage, makes it an indispensable element of waterwise landscapes . It was introduced in 2012 as a Plant Select® introduction . Plant Select® is a program administered by Colorado State University and the Denver Botanic Gardens that promotes plants that thrive in the challenging high plains and intermountain regions of the Western United States.

Origins Delosperma ‘Fire Spinner’ traces its ancestry to the Eastern Cape of South Africa . It was discovered at over 6,000 feet near Tarkastad in the wild . Renowned plantsman Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanic Garden brought it to the United States . He traveled to South Africa to find new plants suitable for growing in the dry, gritty soils and challenging climates of the western states.

Characteristics Delosperma ‘Fire Spinner’ is a showstopper with its vibrant tricolored flowers . Unlike other Delosperma varieties, ‘Fire Spinner’ boasts an amazing array of colors in each flower. The nickel-sized blossoms are apricot to bright orange with a ring of hot pink to magenta surrounding a white eye . These eye-catching flowers are about 1.5 inches across and blanket the foliage from late spring through early summer . The flowers open and close with the amount of sunlight they receive . The intensity of the flower color, combined with the long blooming season and evergreen foliage, makes this a standout perennial plant.

The foliage of Delosperma ‘Fire Spinner’ is also quite attractive. The fleshy, medium green leaves are delicately covered with transparent flakes resembling small pieces of ice, which is why Delosperma are commonly called “ice plant” .
