Water them carefully during the first season in the ground to establish their root systems, and water during long droughts. Keep container plants consistently hydrated. A touch of fertilizer and a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around the plant’s roots will give them insulation and support.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring for size or shape but do not cut to the ground each year. Rather, about every third year, cut out a few of the oldest thickest stems to the ground and leave the younger stems in place to rejuvenate your plant.
