Product Description

Hosta ‘Echo the Sun’ PPAF CPBRAF (20)ct FlatProven Winners® SHADOWLAND® CollectionCommon Name: Hosta

‘Echo the Sun’ is a bright yellow hosta with nicely rippled margins; comparable to a gold version of the blue ‘Diamond Lake’. The low, mounded habit is more prostrate than ‘Diamond Lake’, but shares a similar wedge-shaped leaf of thick substance. Compared to ‘Coast to Coast’, ‘Echo the Sun’ has a smaller habit and a pronounced rippled leaf margin. Lavender flowers appear in midsummer.

Hostas are exceedingly popular perennials in today’s gardens due to their versatility in the landscape. Their subtle colors, tall flower scapes, and broad, coarse leaves fill a niche in garden designs that few other plants can achieve. Their large leaves provide excellent coverage for dying bulb foliage. Hostas also grow well in city environments where the air may be polluted by car exhaust, etc.

Hosta ‘Echo the Sun’ is a beautiful and vibrant hosta variety that will brighten up any shady spot in your garden. Here is a breakdown of its key features and growing requirements:

Appearance:

  • Foliage: ‘Echo the Sun’ is known for its bright, sunny yellow leaves with a slightly rippled margin. The leaves are thick and wedge-shaped, giving the plant a full and textured look. The yellow color is most intense in spring and early summer, gradually becoming more chartreuse as the season progresses.
  • Flowers: In midsummer, ‘Echo the Sun’ produces tall scapes (flower stalks) that rise above the foliage. These scapes bear delicate lavender flowers, adding a touch of purple to the overall display.
  • Habit: This hosta has a low, mounded growth habit, making it an excellent choice for ground cover or edging. It typically grows to about 19 inches tall and 42-48 inches wide.

Growing Conditions:

  • Hardiness Zones: 3-9 (This means it can tolerate a wide range of temperatures)
  • Light: Prefers partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some morning sun, hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH.

Care:

  • Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges
  • Mulching: Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the crown from winter damage.
  • Pest control: Watch out for slugs and snails, which can damage the leaves. Use slug bait or other control methods if necessary.

Uses:

  • Ground cover: Its spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for filling in shady areas.
  • Edging: Creates a vibrant border along pathways or garden beds.
  • Container gardening: Can be grown in containers, adding a splash of color to patios and decks.
  • Specimen plant: Its unique foliage makes it a standout in any shade garden.

Benefits:

  • Bright, colorful foliage: The yellow leaves add a cheerful touch to shady areas.
  • Textural interest: The rippled margins add visual interest to the garden.
  • Easy to grow: Hostas are generally low-maintenance plants, making them a good choice for beginners.
  • Deer resistant: Deer tend to avoid hostas, although they may occasionally nibble on them.

Overall, Hosta ‘Echo the Sun’ is a fantastic choice for adding a touch of sunshine to your shade garden. Its vibrant foliage, easy care, and versatility make it a must-have for any hosta lover.
