MAD ABOUT MANGAVE® CollectionCommon Name: MangaveMangave is a relatively new phenomenon, an intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave. These rare hybrids combine the best of both worlds: the better growth rate and the interesting patterns of Manfreda, and the habit and refinement of Agave. We are very excited (shall we say mad?) about our new hybrids from Walters Gardens hybridizing.

Growers will appreciate the fast growth rate of Mangave-these hybrids finish more quickly than Agave, thanks to their Manfreda parentage. Look to the future for more interesting and unique looks to join the collection!

Mangave is a tender perennial or “temperennial” succulent plant that grows best in full sun. Plant in well-drained, dry to average soil in containers just slightly wider than the width of the rosette or plant directly in the ground. In summer when the plants are actively growing, they appreciate a bit of supplemental watering and half-strength fertilizer. They should be grown dry in winter. Mangave is a slower grower, so it will not quickly overtake the space it is allotted in the landscape.

Mangave ‘Sponge Paint’ is a captivating succulent that combines the best features of Manfreda and Agave plants. This hybrid boasts a compact, symmetrical rosette of thick, silver-gray leaves adorned with red flecks, creating a unique and eye-catching appearance. The leaves have pronounced teeth along the margins and a terminal spine at the end, adding to its textural interest.

This Mangave thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. It is also well-suited for container plantings, where it can be displayed on patios, balconies, or even indoors. While it prefers warm climates and should be protected from frost, it can tolerate a bit more shade and water than regular Agave plants, especially when young and establishing roots.

With its low-maintenance nature, drought tolerance, and striking foliage, Mangave ‘Sponge Paint’ is a fantastic addition to any garden setting.
