About the Pembina Plum
The Pembina Plum (Prunus ‘Pembina Red’) stands as a testament to its rich heritage and exceptional qualities. Bred from the Red June and Manitoba wild plum varieties by N.E. Hansen at the South Dakota Station in 1923, this fruit-bearing tree boasts delectable, sweet, and juicy yellow flesh encased in large, pointed red fruit.
The fruit ripens from mid to late August, sporting red, pointed, thick-skinned exteriors and juicy, sweet yellow flesh. These plums are excellent for fresh consumption or preserving. Its thick skin protects the tender, freestone flesh, making it an ideal choice for both fresh consumption and preserves.
How to Grow the Pembina Plum Tree
Flourishing best when exposed to full sun, the Pembina Plum is a hardy contender, thriving within USDA hardiness zones 3-8. A cold-hardy plum tree for norther growers! This deciduous tree reaches a moderate height of 10-15 feet with a spread of approximately 12 feet, making it suitable for gardens or orchards where space might be limited.
It requires moderate watering and benefits from annual pruning to maintain shape and encourage fruit production. Apply balanced fertilizer in spring for healthy growth. A pollinator is required to be fruitful. See recommendations below.
