A naturally occurring hybrid between strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) and the much less common in our part of the worldA. andranche.A handsome small tree to 15 to 20 feet with with an upright vase-shaped habit. Stringy gray bark showing orange-y new stems for which the genus is famed. Glossy green eaves to a couple of inches, pale pink flowers autumn and winter followed by pea sized orange fruit. Most useful for small spaces and more summer drought adapted than A unedo. Well drained soils. Sun to half shade. Tolerant of poor soils. USDA zone 7b.
