Van Sweet Cherry is a vigorous, productive, crack-resistant sweet cherry with a distinctive bearing habit — short-stemmed, ruby-red fruit grows in a cylinder around the branch, producing clusters of medium-large cherries with firm, juicy flesh and a rich flavor similar to Bing. Originating from Summerland, British Columbia circa 1942 — the same research station that produced Starkrimson® — Van bears young, handles variable weather reliably, and delivers consistent June harvests across Zones 5–8. It’s also the variety that contributed half the genetics to Rainier: the Bing × Van cross that created one of the world’s most celebrated sweet cherries owes its crack resistance and firm texture largely to Van’s influence.
